A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.

“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
