British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
