The January recruitment period proves to be a time of significant rumour and possible major transfers. A number of high-profile stars are being linked with transfers away from their current teams. We examine some of the top names that could be on the move in January.

Antoine Semenyo

Despite Ghana's inability to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, this has kept the forward available, it appears a major transfer is close. This 25-year-old has a deal with a £65 million buy-out clause applicable for a brief window at the start of the month. Recent developments suggest the Premier League champions are now the frontrunners for his signature. Other suitors such as Tottenham and Chelsea are said to have moved on to alternative options, leaving clubs such as Manchester United or Liverpool to make a last-minute move.

Marc Guéhi

The England centre-back has excel for Palace this season a summer move to Liverpool collapsing. As his deal set to run out in the summer, January is the club's final opportunity to obtain a transfer fee for their captain. A host of elite sides, including City and several European giants like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, are believed to be interested. Yet, a winter departure remains difficult, particularly given the manager's dependence on the defender.

Brennan Johnson

This Wales forward has found starting minutes limited at Spurs this campaign. Despite finishing as the side's leading goalscorer last season, he has started just a handful of league games. Reports suggest the North London club is open to a sale for the right price, believed to be in the region of £40 million. Bournemouth appear to be at the front of the queue, with Aston Villa, Brentford, and Crystal Palace also showing an inquiry.

Tottenham rate the Welsh international at approximately forty million pounds.

Rúben Neves

This Portugal playmaker might be set for a comeback to the English top flight after a period in Saudi Arabia. Now only 28, and with his contract ending in the summer of 2026, he represents a potential opportunity. Clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are connected to the former Wolves man. Additionally, there have been rumours from Spanish media that he is prepared to take a pay cut for a switch to Real Madrid.

Marc-André ter Stegen

The veteran Germany shot-stopper is now as the third option at Barcelona under new coach Flick. After fallen out of favour and had an operation, a winter exit seems highly likely. Villa were initially linked as a potential destination, but that option currently seems unlikely. Instead, clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly expressing curiosity in the 33-year-old.

Ivan Toney

This proven English centre-forward has continued scoring frequently in Saudi Arabia. A return to the Premier League might enhance his dwindling chances of being in the national World Cup. But, securing a transfer presents major hurdles. Al-Ahli do not wish to part with him, and his alleged enormous salary make any move difficult. Tottenham, Manchester United, and Everton are all mentioned as admirers.

The striker was instrumental as Al-Ahli to a win in the Saudi Super Cup showpiece.

C. Gallagher

The dynamic midfielder drew widespread attention in the off-season but remained at Atlético Madrid. With few starts in La Liga this term, he is eager to secure more playing time ahead of the tournament. United are heavily linked, and a return to Selhurst Park, where he excelled on loan, is also a possibility, although wage demands might prove a problem.

Harvey Elliott

Despite excelling and being named the best player award at the Under-21 European Championship last summer, this young player has found it tough for minutes on loan at Villa. Unai Emery has stated the temporary transfer will not be made permanent. Due to FIFA regulations about playing for two clubs in a season, a return to Liverpool before next season appears to be the only viable solution.

Kenan Yildiz

This exciting Turkish forward has been in fine form for the Italian giants this season. With his current contract nearing its end, many Premier League sides – such as Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are keeping tabs on the situation. Juventus are desperate to tie down the youngster to a lengthy contract but face a race to keep one of Europe's most promising prospects.

K. Smit

This highly-touted Dutch teenage midfielder has drawn parallels to a Belgian superstar for his playing style. After starring at the Under-19 European Championship, he has become a regular in the AZ first team. This 19-year-old is heavily tipped to make a major transfer this month. Newcastle United reportedly are leading the chase, but could face stiff competition from Real Madrid for a deal priced at approximately twenty-two million pounds.
