Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
