Los Angeles Experiences Historic High Temperatures Just One Week Following Severe Winter Storm.
After enduring heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now seeing unseasonably hot temperatures for late February.
All-Time High Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the mercury reached 91°F (33°C) in central LA, as reported by weather officials. This breaks the old record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on forecast charts for the region.
Safety Warnings
The weather service stated that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that battered the area earlier in the week. That storm delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests cooler conditions will arrive. Temperatures were predicted to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by Friday night.
Several cities that hit ninety degrees were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to see the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central LA can expect weather in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the following week.
