Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
