The ex-lawyer for the former president has stepped down as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a court battle that challenged her right to hold the office.

Official Departure

The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, accepted Habba's resignation on Monday. In a statement that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for Habba to effectively run her office.

"Let no one confuse following the order as giving up," Habba stated. "This battle will now extend throughout the nation."

Judicial Challenge

Habba's exit was triggered by a federal appellate panel determined that she had been acting without proper authority as the federal prosecutor. This judgment is could influence scores of prosecutions in New Jersey.

The court said that a acting appointment that skirted the advice and consent of the Senate breached the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

Future Role and Reaction

Bondi said that she will remain at the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. She will pursue additional appeals of the ruling, aiming for a reversal.

In a statement, the Attorney General contended that judges "cannot be permitted to countermand the President's choice of attorneys responsible for executing the primary duty of the administration of enforcing the law."
