Cameron Norrie secured the biggest success of his career by coming back from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory represents Norrie's maiden success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the latest British man in history to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant success of my professional life, my first win over the top player and probably the most confident athlete in the world right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive elite tournament wins, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's early career.

Game Breakdown

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he cruised in the opening set. However, the British contender gradually fought his way into contention by serving with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical points. His unceasing shot tolerance and consistency slowly took its toll.

For much of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked particularly struggling hitting his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for much of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his steadiness, athleticism and penetration all match while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance into the court and strike effectively.

Career Background

After struggling for an extended period due to a major physical setback and challenges with his form, Norrie slipped as low as 91st in the rankings this year. After making the last eight at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam second week after that, this triumph reinforces the experienced player's improvement as he seeks to return to the world's top twenty and beyond. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his incredible achievements, is yet to solve how to display his top form in indoor conditions.
