A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
