The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
