The Latest Relaxed Playlist Sparks Intense Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but features a few notable adjustments:

  • Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by real players award full XP, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
  • Only two maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Features like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.

So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it's a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, as it provides additional choices for players looking for alternative ways to enjoy the title. However, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 fans are mad.

Community Responses: From Fury to Praise

"People want human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and someone else details everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and can't play this title 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Concerns and Player Feedback

Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a minimum number of real players, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to offer complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I had so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?

If the development team has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
