The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that blankets the capital as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the newly elected regional government petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Court Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution spiking around late evening to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the city have continued as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the amount of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.

This pollution results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
