The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent delegate familiar with the talks indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war governance of the region
Civilian Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Near the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israelis want the war to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and zone areas and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
