We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
